A Complimentary Haunting

Help for the Haunted: A Decade of Vera Van Slyke Ghostly Mysteries (1899-1909) chronicles thirteen cases conducted by ghost hunter Vera Van Slyke and her assistant, Lucille Parsell. “Ghosts and Other Immigrants” is the ninth of the chronicles. It’s set in New York during 1905.

Right after her adventure with Harry Houdini, Vera Van Slyke remained a few days in New York City. She took Lida to meet a friend she had first met twenty years earlier, and the two reunited companions share a story about that meeting. Naturally, that story involves the supernatural.

The story also involves a man named Harry Escott, who mentored Vera in ghost hunting. He was on a case involving an immigrant who seemed to have two personalities — even two nationalities! Is this a puzzle for a psychologist or a ghost hunter? The answer is given in “Ghosts and Other Immigrants.”
